Thome’s September heroics almost
helped the Phillies to a wild card berth and
a meeting with the Giants and although that
didn’t happen he still won GeoClan.com’s
Player Of The Month for the month of September.
The Phillies lasted till the end of September
before they folded blowing seven of their last
eight games and a half game lead in the wild
card to the Florida Marlins. Thome was not
the problem hitting .270 with National League
best in home runs (10), RBI (30) and runs (24).
He hit for a .663 slugging percentage and had
a .387 on base percentage.
Thome proved he was worth all the money
he was paid last fall by not only being
a leader on the field and with the bat
but by his demeanor off the field and
with the people of Philly.
Thome had the city eating out of his
hands by the end of the year, and was
passed the “torch” by Hall
of Famer and Phillies great Mike Schmidt
during the final game at the Vet proceedings
as both stood triumphantly at home plate
arms raised high.
This was fine start to “The House
That Thome Built” in an otherwise
bad finish to the season and the beginning
of the new Citizens Bank Park.
