This
month's GeoClan.com Player Of The Month
(April) is Kevin Millwood of the Philadelphia
Phillies. After coming over to Philadelphia
this
off-season in the surprise trade with
the Atlanta
Braves for minor league catcher Johnny
Estrada,
Millwood was expected to become number
one in the
Phillies starting rotation and so far
he hasn’t
disappointed. The past month saw Millwood
go 4 –1,
with opposing batters hitting .200. This
to go with
29 strikeouts, compared to 14 bases on
balls and only
12 earned runs given up.
The crown jewel for Millwood this month
and one for
the history books was Millwood’s
April 27th no -
hitter versus Barry Bonds and the red
hot San
Francisco Giants on a beautiful Sunday
afternoon. A
year to the day Derek Lowe’s pitched
a no hitter the
previous season for the Boston Red Sox,
Millwood faced
29 batters, threw 108 pitches in 9 innings,
72 of them
being strikes, struck out 10 batters and
walked 3
hitters. Millwood’s no – hitter
was the first of the
2003 Major League Baseball season.
In a season many expect the Phillies
to contend at
least for a wild-card spot, it is nice
to see Millwood
let his presence on this team be felt
early in the
season.
