The
Medal Count - The United
States (U.S.) won 110 medals compared
to China's 100 but China led the gold
medal count with 51 compared to the U.S.'s
36. This gold pictured with Michael Phelps
is one of his personal eight won this
year.
The
U.S. Highlights with other significants
thrown in - 22 year old Jamaican sprinter
Usain Bolt won the 100 (9.69 seconds)
and 200 meters (19.30 seconds) setting
world records for each. This is the first
time a person has set world records for
all three events in the same Olympics.
Bolt, nicknamed "Lightning
Bolt" for
Obvious reasons also won the 4x100 meter
relay with his fellow Jamaican teammates
and set a world record there with a time
of 37.10 seconds. He's the first since
Carl Lewis (1984) to win all three in
an Olympics games. The United States
sprinter Walter Dix won bronze in the
100 meters.
U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps won 8 gold
medals in the games breaking Mark Spitz
record of 7 gold and now has 14 gold
medals, which is the most ever for an
Olympian. Phelps set world records in
7 of the eight events he won gold in
and is only 23 years old! Overall he
has 16 Olympic medals 14 gold and two
bronze.
The United States won the Men's 4 x
100m Freestyle Relay, Men's 4 x 200m
Freestyle Relay and the Men's 4 x 100m
Medley Relay
Aaron Peirsol won the 100 meter backstroke
with Matt Greivers coming in second.
Ryan Lochte won the 200 meter backstroke
with Aaron Peirsol coming in second.
Women's 100m Backstroke was won by Natalie
Coughlin.
41year old United States swimmer Dara
Torres won silver in the 50 meter freestyle
final.
Rebecca Somi won gold in the Women's
200m Breaststroke and got silver in the
100m Women's Breaststroke
U.S.sprinter Tyson Gay disappointed
many and failed to qualify for the 100
meter final and also was part of the
dropped baton exchange on the 4x100 relay
causing the U.S. to be disqualified from
that competition.
18 year old U.S. gymnast Nashia Lukin
won the 2008 Olympic individual all-around
gold medal, won silver on the uneven
bars and bronze on the floor exercise
and won bronze in the balance beam. Counting
the U.S. team winning the silver medal
she won five Olympic medals tying her
with Shannon Miller and Mary Lou Retton
as the most in one Olympic games for
gymnasts.
Shawn Johnson finished second in the
individual all-around and won gold in
the Women's Beam.
The U.S. Gymnastics team won bronze
in the team competition.
The U.S, women's softball team lost
for the first time in eight years and
it happened to be in the gold medal game
losing to Japan 3-1. They took silver.
The American streaks of three softball
golds and 22 victories were broken.
The U.S. women's soccer team took the
gold medal home after defeating Brazil
1-0 in the gold medal game. It's their
third gold in four Olympics.
Americans Misty May-Treanor & Kerri
Walsh won Olympic gold medal over China's
Tian Jia and Wang Jie. Americans Todd
Rogers & Phil Dalhausser took home
gold in the men's competition defeating
Marcio Araujo and Fabio Magalhaes of
Brazil.
The U.S. men's water polo team took
the silver after losing to Hungary in
the gold medal game.
The U.S. men's volleyball team took
home the gold medal defeating Brazil
in 3 straight sets. The U.S. women's
team finished with the silver medal.
Spain's tennis star and current world
number one player Rafael Nadal won men's
gold while Elena Dementieva of Russia
won it for the women. In doubles Swiss
players Roger Federer & Stanislas
Wawrinka won while Venus & Serena
Williams won women's doubles. Elena Dementieva,
Dinara Safina and Vera Zvonareva in fact
swept the gold, silver and bronze medals
for the women's singles. Mike and Bob
Bryan finished with the bronze in the
men's doubles.
The U.S. men and women's basketball
teams both won the gold. The women defeated
the Austrailian team led by center Lauren
Jackson 92-65. The United States women
won its eight Olympic games by an average
of 38.8 points.This is their fourth consecutive
gold medal, their sixth overall, and
extended their Olympic winning streak
to 33 games. The men won their first
gold since 2000 and defeated Spain 118-107.
The United States men have medaled in
every Olympics they have played in, including
13 gold medals, 1 silver and two bronze,
while compiling a 122-5 win-loss record
for a 96.0 winning percentage. U.S. Olympic
teams featuring NBA players are 35-3
in the Olympics, and the USA has won
four of five Olympic titles (1992, 1996,
2000 and 2008).
United
States own Shalane Flanagan finished
with the bronze in the 10,000 meter final.
Christian
Cantwell won silver in the men's shot
put .
United
States' thrower Stephanie Brown Trafton
won the discus throw gold medal.
United States' Jennifer Stuczynski won
the silver in the pole vault.
United States' sprinter Sanya Richards
finished with a bronze medal in the 400
meters final
Angelo Taylor, Kerron Clement and Bershawn
Jackson swept the 400 meter hurdles for
the United States winning gold, silver
and bronze in order.
Dawn Harper of the United States won
the 100 meter hurdles.
Sheena Tosta of the United States won
the 400 meter hurdles.
Shawn Crawford and Walter Dix finished
in silver and bronze respectively in
the 200 meter final.
U.S.Boxer
Deontay Wilder took home bronze in the
men's heavyweight (91kg) division.
Hyleas
Fountain won the silver in the women's
heptathlon.
U.S. men's baseball team took home the
Bronze medal.
Allyson Felix won the women's 200 meter
gold.
Bryan Clay won gold in the 1500 meter
decathlon.
Both the men's and women's team won
gold in the 4x400 relay final.
Kenya's
Samuel Kamau Wansiru won the men's marathon
while Romania's Constantina Tomescu won
for the women.
In rowing, the women's eight took home
gold while the men's eight took home
bronze.

In shooting, Vincent Hancock won gold

won gold in the Men's Double Trap.
Jamaica's Sally Ann-Fraser won the women's
100 meter final while Veronica Campbell-Brown
won the 200 meter final. Meleane Walker
won the 400 meter hurdles. The men won
the 4x100 meter relay.
For Great Britain, Rebecca Adlington
won the Women's 400m & 800m Freestyle.
The

divisions badminton's men's singles,
women's singles and women's doubles,
