KOVACK'S TAKES
By Bob Kovack

The Evil Empire strikes again

The rich keep getting richer and richer and richer, and it is not changing anytime soon. George Steinbrenner the leader of the evil empire has struck once again and the New York Yankees traded for the best player in baseball, Alex Rodriguez.

They acquired A-Rod for a slightly above average, second base basemen in Alfonso Soriano and baseball should be ashamed of itself.

This was a deal that the Texas Rangers obviously did to dump salary and everyone already knows that, but enough is enough. Whatever ever happened to for the good of the game or in the best interest of competitive balance in baseball?

Baseball and more specifically commissioner, Bud Selig needed to do something about this, but of course did not and will not. Baseball cashes in, gets what they want and basically the hell with everybody else.

Selig and company now have arguable the best and most marketable player in the nation's number one market and that is it as far as they are concerned. Selig does not care about what is good for the game and is blinded by the dollar signs of A-Rod playing in the Big Apple
.
The only positive thing about this deal is that it reiterates the hate that people have for the Yankees and they definitely play the needed role of the villain in baseball. Everybody either hates the Yankees or loves them and it is beyond my imagination how anybody can root for this team that consistently just tries to buy title after title.

Trading AI not the answer
The NBA trade deadline has come and gone with Sixers deciding to do nothing, but that has not stopped talk about what to do in off-season.

Many fans and media personalities a like are now demanding the trade of Allen Iverson this summer, claiming there are no other answers to this team's problems.

This is eerily similar to a situation that happened 12 years ago and hopefully history will not repeat itself. It was the summer of 1992 and a Sixers superstar was preparing to represent the city of Philadelphia and his country in the Olympics in Barcelona.

However as we all know now Charles Barkley was traded in between the end of the season and the start of the Olympic for Jeff Hornacek, Tim Perry and Andrew Lang. That was followed by four years of horrendous basketball until the Sixers drafter a 5'11" shooting guard named Allen Iverson who has since taken the team to the brink of a championship and made basketball exciting again in Philly almost single handedly.

The Sixers are once again struggling again, Iverson is getting ready for the Olympic this summer and many want to ship him out of time. No thank you, I do not want to dump one of the best players in a game for a couple of Perry's and Lang's, because that is what they'll get.
This team does not need a great deal of help, but getting rid of Iverson is not taking the necessary steps backwards to later go forward that everyone thinks.
They need to move Iverson to the point and build around him. He still has at least four years of top-notch basketball in him and even if they take a year or two to rebuild, Iverson can still be part of the answer.

Iverson is no where near perfect and he should work out more, go to more practices and work on his jump shot, but he still gets it done on the court every time he steps on it.

Trading Iverson would just be another Barkley situation all over again, and who is ready for another five years of horrific, boring basketball.

March Madness and the Hawks
The most exciting month of the year is hear again and don't blink or else you may miss it. So get out your brackets, point spreads, media guides on Valparaiso and the Rams of Virginia Commonwealth, sit back and enjoy yourself.

March Madness is a must see whether you are a college basketball fan or not and you can't beat 65 teams in a single elimination tournament spread across three weekends.

It has everything from last second buckets, crushing defeats, to the yearly Cinderella stories. And this year the city of Philadelphia has to give their ultimate support to the St. Joseph's Hawks. The Hawks are a team and a story that can't help but grab your attention.

March Madness is exhilarating and amazing regardless, but adding a little team from Philly into the mix makes it that much more special to watch.
