Ease Up Fellas, The Women Have A Place At The Table
By Clayton Ruley

I was watching Dan Le Batard on ESPN’s Sportscenter in a segment called “Sportscenter Views”, the other day and he was saying how trash the women’s game was and how they couldn’t make a lay-up and he was just going on and on.

I got me thinking about the game and I wrote some words for everyone to think about (like to hear it, here it go)
I’m about to go against most people’s opinion, and of course that is okay, when I say that the women’s game isn’t bad.

In fact I will say it is very decent.

As a basketball fan I love the fact that any ball is going through the hoop, I can watch most games, and in fact I’d rather watch woman play in the league I know from their college days than watch some Division II or III players I’ll never see.

With the NCAA championship being decided in April and the WNBA coming back around late June/July its time for the ladies to get their props and for the haters to stop.

The WNBA gets better ratings than the NHL in the states and the college games while having only two main powers UConn and the University of Tennessee is improving as more young women are playing ball and realizing that they could make a career of it.

It makes me cringe when I hear people, mostly men, talk about how they could bust these college and professional women players asses and how they can’t watch the games cause they don’t dunk.

First off your inflated hoop dreams don’t make you better that a woman who has probably played the best men in her neighborhood and secondly you even hear of evolution of the game?

By that I mean the fact women haven’t been playing this game seriously like us men have and that with time they will be dunking and playing above the rim?

Don’t believe me? Well I’m not saying you’re going to see a slew of women dunking like Vince in the near future but just like the beginnings of professional (BAA, NBA and other leagues) leagues for men was played below the rim it takes time to grow and eventually the fems will be hammering on each other.

Former North Carolina Tarheel Charlotte Smith was the first woman I remember dunking in a game (about 8 years ago) and then Michelle Snow from Tennessee did it. Now in the WNBA you see Lisa Leslie doing it. Are they doing it on the regular? No, but it’s getting better and in fact Candace Parker, a high school senior who is going to Tennessee even won the McDonald’s Dunk Contest
versus a group of young men winning it by doing the arm over the eye dunk that made former Boston Celtic, Toronto Raptor and Orlando Magic Dee Brown famous.

Did she get the benefit of the doubt because she was a woman?

Probably but she still shouldn’t have won versus a man if men can do it better and are really “manly”!

Ok, would I watch a women’s game over the fellas?

Not necessarily!

But I can say that there are several things I can appreciate about the game that is different from the men’s game.

First off because most women can’t dunk they have to have the basics down pact. How many times have you seen a dunker in the NBA who can’t create his own shot or a shot blocker who can’t score! It’s less likely to happen in the women’s game because of the emphasis on being able to do everything. This is also aided by the fact that since women are smaller you’ll see the 5-8 guards grabbing a many rebounds as the 6-3 forwards/centers.

Also, and this is more specific to the NBA, the teamwork is better. There isn’t a whole bunch of prima donnas who only care about their stats and how much money they are making. Maybe if they were making NBA money it would be different but for the time being that’s how it is.

Lastly, the women also seem to appreciate the space between the paint and the three-point line more. Men seem to be entranced with either shooting threes or taking it to the rack and trying to posterize someone while forgetting about all that space in the middle.

And I like that the handles are coming up in the women’s game.Five years ago it was real slow, bring the ball up court pass the ball inside or shoot from outside but now you see a lot of "playground" handles in the college women's and WNBA game. Not to the levels of the men but someone like Shannon Johnson and Ticha Penicheiro are like the Steve Francis and Jason Kidd or the women’s game and would have 80% of men on skates (or falling)!

This is some article for the women’s liberation movement just something to think about. Don’t hate on the women without think of their progress. Fifty years ago women had to sneak out the house to play anything, their place was thought to be in the home. Now they are allowed to play sports like volleyball, basketball, soccer, tennis and many others. Men held down women for years and now
they rightfully are enjoying a day at the park for more than the flowers in the dirt! We can’t hold them to the same level as the guys yet! That’s like saying minorities should be on the same level as the majority because we have civil rights. Yeah dummies, but it was less than fifty years ago!
