GeoReview: Robin Thicke, The Evolution of Robin Thicke
By Clayton Ruley

Thicke has been on the scene for a few years but his new look (short cut) , family ties (actor father Alan from Growing Pains) and beautiful wife (actress Paula Patton from movies Idlewild and Deja Vu) coupled with his nice sound has people buzzing! I grabbed his album so lets give you a quick review of my findings.

"Got 2 Be Down" has a Marvin Gaye sound to it and
features Faith Evans as his Tammi Terrell. Robin does Marvin's falsetto to perfection and if you came in you'd be hard pressed differentiate between them.

"Complicated" deals with trying to change and being too mixed up in your own stuff to make a move for the better of you. All of that over a simple yet complicated beat.

"Would That Make U Love" asks what needs to be done to get that special person and the guitar play is nice and plays throughout the song.

"Everything I Can't Have" borrows sounds of the past (think your favorite caberet in the 1940s) and Thicke talks about what's on his tongue but he cant touch.

"Teach U A Lesson" is a slow ballad that has Thicke talking about what he's gonna do to a bad girl. Thicke shows a host of octaves in his voice and "I Need Love" is one of the songs he seems to combine those the best.

Of course there is the popular "Lost Without U", a love song that seems to never go off the airwaves, "Shooter" featuring Lil' Wayne and "Wanna Love U Girl" featuring Pharrell. "Can U Believe" sounds like something off a movie soundtrack and it's really nice track that reminds you of the innocence of love. "Cocaine" is 60's beat cut up and real funk!

Songs like "Lonely World", "Angels", "2 The Sky" is more contemporary sounding and shows me Thicke is more than just a gimmick but someone who can appeal to more than one audience.

Overall a nice comeback for Thicke, I'll give it 4 GeoGlobes. His evolution should scare some R&B cats into the recording booth.
