After
the success of his first LP Trouble
featuring the singles "Locked Up
(Remix featuring Styles P.)" "Ghetto"
and "Lonely", the hook bandit
named Akon returned in 2006 with his second
album called Konvicted.
Konvicted is obviously a reference
to his prior time spent in jail and his
Konvict Music label. Konvict has spent
the last few years doing a lot of guest
appearances and doing them with some of
Hip Hop's highest profile acts like Eminem,
Snoop Dogg, Gwen Stefani and Young Jeezy
among others.
His combination of Hip Hop, R&B, Reggae
and African Music is what seems to be
his most appealing quality and he brings
a tougher sound to his music. He's not
a lover so much as he's a street song
siren who deals with street realities.
On Konvicted, Akon doesn't veer
far from his path of the streets but also
gives people a few deeper tracks than
what we all hear on the radio.
His
singles include "Smack That"
featuring Eminem a raunchy song for the
clubs, "I Wanna Love You", a
strippers dream song and the Marleyesque
"Don't Matter", a ode to love
and it's unwillingness to die!
Other
tracks you might check out include Blown
Away featuring Styles P., a tough track
that you'd expect from these two, "Tired
of Runnin'", a track dealing with
police harassment and abuse, "Once
In A While", a track about hope and
finding a better life or a nice sample
familiar to crate diggers and "Mama
Africa", a song about what Africa
has to share with it's people and descendants.
The majority of the 12 track LP was produced
by Akon himself and also features production
by Eminem, Troo.L.S & Rune Rask and
SuperVillian Beats.
This
album has a little of everything and the
lyrics are more diverse in topic but Akon
keeps to his tough talk and doesn't open
up too much and his voice can be whiney
at times. That said, I was surprised by
the LP. I'll give it 3 GeoGlobes.
