Coming straight out
of Los Angeles. Murs has been on the scene for
a second with a group called the Living Legends
now after dropping over five albums solo Murs,
returns with producer and Little Brother member
9th Wonder for a super combination in 3:16 The
9th Edition.
Murs talks about the ladies and his pull with
them in “Bad Man”. The West coast
representative comes out talking about ending
the phone tag and just getting to business. The
beat sounds like something in from an amusement
park and Murs gives you three episodes with females
trippin' and his reactions.
“3:16” is a straight battle song filled
with 9th’s looped samples. Murs is very
aggressive on this track and talks about why he
is underrated in this game saying lines like:
A hard man to take down like Michael Vick on his
feet! The song portrays anyone who comes at Murs
as crazy. This is especially if you’re unprepared.
“The Rain” is a dark song and the
looped Rain is definitely failing on the heavy
track. Murs talks about the love and the disappointments
of dealing with them through the years. Whether
it was in school or when he was grown, Murs gives
up is failures and is strategy now in the game.
There are a lot of times when you like a girl
and she likes that loser dude with five kids and
your like why? Seems like Murs has faced those
situations too much.
Talking about robberies usually isn’t a
good thing but I hope Murs really was involved
in this tale he described in the short cut “Trevor
An’ Them”. He talks about a caper
that happened in L.A. and he didn’t want
to be involved in. It is funny and lets you know
that your homies can get you really in bad predicaments
if you don’t do you first!
Murs shows more of affection for the ladies in
the 70’s sampled groove “Freak These
Tales” a soulful storytelling session about
what kind of women Murs liked and how he gets
them. Detailed and capable of making you think
of your own squad of females, this song is one
of the best tracks on the album.
“H.U.S.T.L.E.” is a very upbeat cut
and looks to be more of a head-banging track.
Murs and his crew saw hustle throughout the chorus.
Murs isn’t talking about straight selling
drugs no Murs is talking about hustling and the
extent of his hustling while still trying to be
clean and pursue his career in music. It’s
nice to hear a dude talk about leaving the drug
game alone and being really dedicated to his craft.
Murs talks about using a gun versus using your
brain and other skills in “Walk Like A Man”.
The gun is a tool that gives a lot of people power
they would never know of before. Murs does a great
job hyping down the people that feel they have
to always carry to make them a man. In the middle
of the song the song switches up and Murs talks
about his best friend dying from a gun incident
and the sorrow he experiences. The first beats
are hot and the last one aids another story about
a familiar topic: revenge. From the accident to
the church to the revenge Murs does a great job
expressing himself on this one.
The L.A. native is mad and comes at fellas that
wear jewelry, big cars and a certain white rapper
in “And This Is For” The slow beat
with a sing rift hits hard and Murs goes into
detail about why he doesn’t get the money
he thinks he deserves and why that white rapper
(Eminem) should watch himself and his mouth. Murs
lastly talks about his love for Hip Hop and how
he isn’t going to let it get taken away
from its originators like other music art forms.
“The Animal” is a crazy track and
Phonte from Little Brother joins his brother 9th
and Murs to kill another tight murky song. There
are horns and heavy drum programming and both
MC’s tell about their skills on the mic
and how they are doing it for the hoods and regions.
Short but sweet this album should remind many
that the best songs are so often unheard by many.
I like this album, 9th Wonder does his thing throughout
the album as the beats are crazy and Murs the
MC shows his versatility as an MC over a host
of different sounding tracks and topics. Murs
seems like someone a lot of people could associate
with and that is very important in this game.
His likeability and skills will hopefully get
him over the lack of commercial success and he
will get more cash. He certainly has a passion
and skill that deserves acknowledgment.
I’ll give the album 4.5 globes. If he blows
up this could be one of those starters joints
if he doesn’t it will go in as a heavy under
the radar jawn.
