Close your eyes and forget what you think
you know about White “Soul”
singers because Joss Stone is none of
that and so much more. This England native
hooked up with some of contemporary music’s
best and redid some of the best soul songs
in The Soul Sessions. After a long
wait let’s check the album out and
give it an official GeoClan.com rating.
“Chokin Kind” features a full
accompaniment of instruments including
a sweet guitar being played by Willie
“Little Beaver” Hale. In the
song she talks about the love that scares
you it is so powerful. Stone shows a smooth
vocal style and sings the song to the
top of its capability.
“Super Duper Love (Are You Diggin’
On Me)” Pt. 1 features Stone giving
props to that special someone who brightens
her day and makes sure that he will be
back for seconds and thirds. The organ
played by Timmy Thomas has a constant
presence in the song although it goes
on and off throughout the piece. On an
upbeat tempo, marriage is the theme and
she gives you the inside details.
More funky and with featuring Ahmir “Questlove”
Thompson on the drums (he also produces
the track), Kirk Douglas on the guitar
and a crazy wicked bass guitar by Adam
Blackstone, “Fell In Love With A
Boy” is a sultry song that lets
Stone talk about being naughty. The track
gets into being with someone you can’t
have fully and want so bad. Don’t
we all feel that! Don’t sleep on
James Poyser and Kamal on the keyboards.
This song like it could be used for a
15-minute freestyle without getting dull.
Yes, people the cut is that sharp.
“Victim Of A Foolish Heart”
is song you would hear in the sexy nightclub
on a Sunday night after you thought the
preaching was over. This song features
Stone dropping knowledge on the girl who
broke your heart then comes back saying
she is sorry! Be careful fellas is the
message and we need to all heed because
heartbreak is not what is up all the time!
Stone is representing for the ladies in
“Dirty Man”, talking about
that no good guy who has caused trouble
to the tee and now has to go. The song
is short and sweet and features an acoustic
guitar being player by Angelo Morris.
The song, originally written by Bobby
Miller, talks about payback for times
of torment and finding peace finally.
The John Ellison penned “Some Kind
Of Wonderful” is another club joint
and the thump of the bass and the drums
will have you put a pep in your step.
I guess that’s the point of the
song because Stone talks about being able
to stay home and not do what she used
to do because her man is special.
“I’ve Fallen In Love With
You” originally written by Carla
Thomas, is a declaration of love for that
special person and how penetrating it
is. She shows her range singing was a
bass in her voice and then reaching higher
and higher. With great background singing
by Taneka Duggan and Deanna Carroll and
a gospel feel to it, this track sounds
like a new beginning.
“I Had A Dream” sounds like
a poem that has been in your book for
years and finally decided to debut. Starting
with a slight play of the organ and building
to a full bodied sound in the middle of
the song, this song talks about people
being happy and coming together for building
purposes. This song is powerful and makes
you think of big things that happened
in your life.
Aretha Franklin made “All The King’s
Horses” famous and Stone does it
justice in her rendition of the song that
deals with the harsh relationship breakup.
Riveting and with passion, Stone has fun
on the up-tempo track and show more diversity
in musical taste and sound.
The Isley Brothers classic “For
The Love Of You” is done over with
out the accompaniment that made it groovy
but Stone voice is nice on the track.
Strictly using the keyboard played by
Angelo Morris, Stone makes her voice the
star of the song and pulling more out
of her body with every lyric. Not the
original by far but a nice job by the
relative newcomer.
Overall this album is one that will take
you back to the 70’s and 60’s
with pleasure. Stone has definite soul
and sounds slightly like Beyonce Knowles
of Destiny Child (when she’s not
shaking). The Isley’s cover was
my least favorite of the tracks but it
still showed her skill. The material used
showed her range and diversity in style.
She is no one time wonder with this music
she can come back anytime. I look forward
to hearing her on future original music.
I’ll give The Soul Sessions 4 globes.
