GeoReview: Skillz, Confessions Of A Ghostwriter

By Clayton Ruley

Skillz is the Virginia native many know from his end of the year summaries done rapping over a hot beat.   If you are an older fan of Hip Hop you can remember a dude named Mad Skillz who did "The Nod Factor" on his From Where??? . yeah it's the same dude! Now after being signed to Rawkus only to see it fold before his album came out, Skillz (he dropped the Mad because he's not mad no more) has returned from doing his work undercover (writing other people's songs) to put his own offer on the table.

Featuring beats by some of VA's finest like Timbaland and the Neptunes and others like Hi-Tek, Nottz, Darren Hinson and Skillz himself. Skillz talks about topics like trifling females, the loss of his mother, his skills as an MC and who he has written for without ever mentioning their names of course!   Skillz isn't what most consider a "down south rapper" because he can kill a freestyle and cares about the lyrics more than the money. That means he will write cheesy stuff for others and save the caviar for himself.

Skillz is like a comedian on wax and he can drop knowledge at the same time. Skillz has different sounds like "Hip Hop", a track that something made standing on the corner freestyling, "Suzie Q" featuring Cee Lo, a track talk about ladies that have no shame and hard cuts like "PA to VA" featuring Pretty Ugly, where the two trade barbs on why they are nice on the microphone and where they are from and "You Only Get One", talking about his mother who past recently. Skillz is a throwback and

Of course he makes fun of people starting problems a,k,a, Beef and more on "Skillz vs. Shagwan" and let's just say Shaq (if he's smart) needs to stick to his day job! On "Imagine", Skillz talks about money and how it's causes a lot of the problems we see in society!   It's a real nice song with a simple beat! "Ya'll Don't Wanna Do That" is one for those who wanna know more about what it's like being in the business and for the haters too!

Overall this album is good because it combine lyrics and different beats. Skillz doesn't mind laughing at himself and others too and he isn't trying to be what he isn't which is refreshing in today's Hip Hop scene.

I'll give it 3 GeoGlobes!
