Outkast
returns with Idlewild ,
a LP inspired by the movie in theatres
of the same title. With said if you think
this will be a typical Outkast album then
you are wrong but then again you are right!
I say this because Outkast isn't just
rhyming on tracks but then again when
did they ever just do that! Even when
they were rapping it was on some funked
out soul or cosmic sounding cut! Now the
theme for most of the album is something
out the early 20 th century, setting of
the movie! Lets stop playing and get to
the review of this anticipated LP from
our oldest friends from the ATL.
"Mighty
"O"" is a warning shot for those who think
Outkast ain't doing their thing! Andre
the music business, family who get too
involved in the street stuff, how he meets
people who want to be with or know him
because of what he does and not who he
is as a person while Big Boi talks about
why Outkast is the bomb diggity and how
the government placed crack in the community!
"Peaches"
talks about being on your grind despite
the temporary hurt and features Purple
Ribbon's Scar and the ever ready Sleepy
Brown! "Idlewild Blue (Don'tchu Worry'Bout
Me)" is a blues cut sung by 3000 that
is free and funky like 3000 himself.
"N2U" features Khujo Goodie and Big Boi
talks the ladies and how he's just trying
to have some fun not a full relationship!
Of course he does this in a story format
coming from high school to the present.
"Morris Brown" is the second single and
singer Scar does the damn thing singing
about a life and the ladies being like
a marching band which is the reason for
the thumping beat! Sleepy does his thing
on the background of course and I guarentee
you will leave your seat when you hear
this!
"Chronomentrophobia"
is the fear of clocks and Andre talks
about the changing times and how before
you know it change and asks the question
will you be prepared? He talks about freedom
and Outkast legacy in music, The train
"The
Train" is leaving and Big Boi is the captain
on this track as he takes you a trip to
the past, present and gives a glimpse
into the future! This train sounds like
it's on warp speed with a wind of Sleepy
Brown and Scar as the open window passes
the trees.
Andre
does his drum programming thang on production
and gets his "Life Is A Musical"
on as he asks about not letting anything
change them!
"Hollywood
Divorce" talks about how the game sours
after a while and you feel pimped! Snoop
Dogg and Lil' Wayne join the cut and do
their thing with both members of the group!
Lil Wayne talks about how the media comes
in to New Orleans and uses it to make
profit but don't help the people. Snoop
talks about the game and how he accepts
it but with an open eye when he sleeps
because it may try to leave him or kill
him.
"Call
The Law" features the big time singing
of Janelle Monae and Big Boi coming in
and out with a little rap commentary from
time to time. Monae is on Big Boi's Purple
Ribbon label and sounds like she should
be on Broadway singing threats to her
man because he was running around on her!
More
solo cuts are on the horizon as Dre does
his thing on the nothingness cut "Makes
No Sense It", a jitterbug cut where he
does the rhyme wiggle and Big Boi does
his thing on the attitude cut "Buggface".
"In
Your Dreams" featuring Killer Mike and
Janelle Monae is very futuristic and reminds
you of a party in the middle of South
America. Killer Mike brings you to the
ATL and gives you a hoodtale.
"PJ
& Rooster" is a cut theme cut straight
out the movie as well as "Mutron Angel"
featuring Whild Peach, Macy Gray's performance
on "Greatest Show On Earth". Dre's "When
I Look In Your Eyes" is beautiful
and makes you want to grab your lady or
gent and dance to the horns blazing.
To
end the album we have "Dyin To Live" a
piano laced track with Andre singing for
his sweet and A Bad Note, a song with
a violent sound courtesy of Dre's alter
ego Johnny Vulture.
I
can't say enough about this one. It's
good for whatever you're doing at the
time because it's both Outkast and the
movie's soundtrack at the same time! I
can see older folks getting the head nod
to this as well as any Outkast enthusiast!
It combine so many genre of music it's
a must have (as always when Outkast is
out)!
I'll
give Idlewild
5 GeoGlobes. Outkast changes the face
of contemporary music every time they
come out.! This album and the group, in
general, have the lyrics, sounds and the
ability to rise to any occasion. You can
listen this multiple times and not get
tired!
