GeoReview: Miri Ben-Ari, The Hip Hop Violinist

By Clayton Ruley

Miri Ben-Ari isn't new to the recording process as she came out with Sahara and Temple Of Beautiful Music in 1999 and 2003 respectively but what is new is she is now doing her thing on Hip Hop/R&B artists adding her instrument skills on the tracks for that authoritative sound.   Featuring production from the artist herself, her brother Ohad, Kanye West, Baby Dooks, Dash, Dirty Swift and Bruce Waynne, P. King, P-Nut and Kere Brown, Nick Fury and Akon she shows how the violin helps any song sound more distinguished! That and people like Musiq, Styles P. Scarface, Fabolous, Anthony Hamilton and Pharoahe Monch help the sound move.   This is more like a mixtape with her violin constantly in the forefront than a solo effort.

The 15-track LP is a nice concept and Miri does uses the violin like a singer would use their voice. Songs that I like in particular are "Jump and Spread Out", the original and remix, "We Gonna Win", a hard hitting track with a positive message and the Ghost on it, the first single "Sunshine To The Rain", "New World Symphony" "She Was Just A Friend", featuring newcomer Algebra and "I've Been Waiting On You" featuring Consequence and John Legend, a song talking about love.

It's good to see the classical instruments forge alliances with new music and Miri is making change because I'm sure people were skeptical at first.   While this LP probably won't do good numbers it isn't a waste to listen to and lets people know that music in general has a more creativity waiting to be exposed.

I'll give it 3 GeoGlobes!
