GeoReview: J Dilla, Donuts
By Clayton Ruley

The world of Hip Hop lost one of its best tenants when Jay Dee a.k.a. J Dilla pasted early this past winter after complications of kidney failure didn't allow him to stay here with us! We know he's in a better place but someone so talented wouldn't seem to be a candidate for a early exit from this world. Well, I guess if you consider the legacy he leaves in the music game maybe he didn't leave early after all!

The former Slum Village, Soulquarians and Madlib cohort has done plenty of hot beats many know about including tracks for music's best like Common, A Tribe Called Quest (also Q-Tip), De La Soul, Janet Jackson, Erykah Badu, The Pharcyde, Pete Rock, Busta Rhymes, Quasimodo and Bilal among many others!  But it's his Donuts piece that many will hold as his best work! Donuts is a thirty-one track instrumental LP with sounds coming from Hip Hop, Soul, Funk, Electronica, Rock and Roll and more!

This album is hard to put down once you pick it up and is good music for everything you do because of its changing sounds. Just when you get tired of one sound another different sound comes on. Dilla only gives the listener about 1 to 3 minutes per track so it's real fluent and this allows the artist in all of us a chance to get short but memorable ideas for each track!

My personal favorites are "Workinonit",   "Stop", "People", "Time: The Donuts of The Heart", "Lightworks", "The Diff'rence", :Two Can Win", "Don't Cry", "Gobstopper" , "One for Ghost", "Da Factory:", "U-Luv" (My real, real favorite!), "Hi" and "Bye"

I know I just gave half of the track listing but it's that good! You will also some song that you've heard other artists so that will have you skipping around after the first 40 times you listen to it.

Overall I will the give the LP 5 GeoGlobes! It's refreshing to hear a producer use so many different sounds especially when connected to Hip Hop and yet such a shame he will no longer grace us with his presence! At least we got a chance to hear expression it some of its highest form! Rest in peace Dilla!
