Gnarls
Barkley is the team of solo artist Cee-Lo
Green formerly of the Goodie Mob and Danger
Mouse, most known for his The Grey
Album
treatment of Jay-Z's The Black Album
using The Beatles songs to Jay's verses
and his work with the Gorillaz second
album Demon Dayz .
The groups name is a reference to Charles
Barkley, the Hall of Fame basketball player.
The group met in 1990s and in began recording
together in 2003. In 2006, one
of their leaked collaborations: "Crazy",
got major digital play and eventually
was number one on British charts! Now
lets see how the collaborative does for
a whole album.
"Go-Go
Gadget Gospel" refers to the 1980s cartoon
Inspector Gadget and the sound is something
of a carousel sound with a choir! Very
eye-opening to see the least.it will wake
almost anyone up (including a late night
review writer!)
"Crazy"
is about different situations and people
that will make you feel crazy.sometimes
you are deemed crazy but it's really about
who's perceiving! Very catchy beat and
Cee-Lo's voice is perfect for the song.
The topic is real which is why the it
did so good in the download era! I don't
know if many radio stations would have
taken a chance on a cut like this but
that's why you can't trust the opinions
of everyone.
We
want to be different, an individual to
say the least and live on our own space
of well.space and "St. Elsewhere" talks
about that! A dark sound with a great
drum and guitar package this track makes
sense!
"Gone
Daddy Gone" reminds you of the track you'd
likely see on MTV in it's infancy stage!
The song talks about love being gone in
a frantic drummed pace! It's like chaos
at a super pace!
"Smiley
Faces" deals with sometimes dealing with
things in masks instead of letting your
guard down and showing what your really
feeling or the truth of the particular
matter. Politics of sorts, but we should
all take a look at in this manner from
time to time because it's easy to get
broken down. Upbeat and electric this
track makes you think of the character
"Carlton Banks" from The Fresh Prince
of Bel-Air
and his stupid dance!
A
track that reminds me of something you'd
hear during the old Scooby Doo Mysteries,
"The
Boogie Monster". Cee-Lo hits us the listener
with a baritone voice as he talks about
a monster in his closet and under his
bed!
"Feng
Shui" is the closest thing I've heard
to a conventional beat yet and Cee-Lo
gets his rap on as he talks about walking
in a house and describes its set up and
more!
"Just
A Thought" talks about suicide for a minute
over a track that reminds me of a dark
cloudy day. This song relates to many
because there are days when you think
you do all you can do and nothing is going
your way! But in the end we keep on pushing
because it's too easy to quit!
A
sped up beat and different voices describe
the track aptly titled "Transformer".
I would guess it would describe the ability
to adapt to different scenarios and life
in general! I would hate to be on speed
listening to this cut because I would
jump off the bridge. Think of fast forward
times two! This leads nicely to
the slow and meaningful "Who Cares", a
track about being complicated, just doing
you and no complaining because we'd all
have a reason to complain about what we
CANT change!
On
a classic break beat "Online" talks about
being on point and not breakin your stride!
Like the digital bandwidth we are fortunate
to get these days (Well most of us!).cer
If
you are talking about a crazy track look
no further than "Necromancer". This is
a track about liking someone better dead!
It breaks down a planned death and it's
before and aftermath. It sounds like something
out the funeral parlor because of the
organ throughout the track.
"Storm
Coming" is a frantic track that could
easily double as someone's heart rate!
The song deals with living and dying and
doing all you can.
When
was "The Last Time" you danced? That's
the question of this final track! Cee-Lo
reminds me of Dracula or someone possessed
man wanting his prize (for lack of a better
word)!
Overall
it's hard to describe this piece but I
will say it was everything you wanted
in something experimental. It mixed the
genres like some mixed soda flavors at
the fountain! Cee-Lo used different ranges
and Danger Mouse beats were incredible!
I really like every track on the LP and
have no idea why such chaos sounds so
sweet! I think the length of the tracks
and their titles help also as you don't
get tired before the next one comes on.
And with all this the lyrics often
have messages of individuality, believing
in one's self and working thorough adversity!
I didn't know what to expect from these
two individuals but their union filled
with chemistry and creativity! This is
what music and being flexible and comfortable
in it can create, something that has few
boundaries!
I'll
give St. Elsewhere
5 GeoGlobes.
