Con la gran popularidad de la canción "La Gasolina", Daddy Yankee se ha consagrado en un fenómeno internacional. Se ha mantenido en la delantera de lo que fue la explosión del Reggaeton en el 2005. Ha sellado su "cross over" en EEUU con su ultimo proyecto "Barrio Fino En Directo", una combinación de CD y DVD. Este no ha de ser confundido con su previa obra de arte y de ventas multiplatino "Barrio Fino".

En Directo traer 9 de las canciones de Barrio Fino grabadas en vivo con algunos temas nuevos. Dos de las canciones nuevas son colaboraciones con raperos americanos, Snoop Dogg ("Gangsta Zone") y Paul Wall ("Machete Reloaded"). Los dos traen en tono mas relajado al flow energético usual de Daddy.

Admito que es interesante sino un poco extraño escuchar a Snoop y Paul tratar de ajustarse al ritmo rápido y juguetón del Reggaeton. La calidad del sonido de las canciones en vivo es increíble, parecen grabadas en un estudio. La energía de los miles de fanáticos cantando cada palabra de las canciones en vivo no es nada menos que contagioso.

El DVD contiene una galería de fotos, el video del tema "Corazones" (que es tan fuerte como el mensaje de la canción), partes de los recitales, documentales y un previo de su anticipada película "Talento de Barrio". Aunque los visuales ayudan a demostrar la gran popularidad de Daddy, el DVD es un poco incomodo de navegar. Recomiendo esto mas como una pieza complementaria que una introducción a la música de Daddy Yankee.

Para los que recién empiezan con Daddy o Reggaeton en general les recomiendo que empiecen con Barrio Fino (el original). Entiendo el deseo de presentar a Daddy mejor en el mercado americano pero podría haber sido mejor el intento. Aunque fue un lindo toque el DVD, nosotros los fans ya establecidos esperábamos más que 4 canciones nuevas. Le doy 3 globos de Geo.

After his catapult into mainstream fame, largely fueled by the mass appeal of “La Gasolina”, Daddy Yankee has effortlessly stayed at the forefront of the Reggaeton explosion of 2005. He has sealed his cross over deal by dropping Barrio Fino En Directo, a CD/DVD set. This is not to be confused with his previous multi platinum masterpiece Barrio Fino.

En Directo brings back 9 of the tracks from the aforementioned in live concert settings along with a few new tracks. Two of the new tracks feature appearances by Snoop Dogg (“Gangsta Zone”) and Paul Wall (“Machete Reloaded”). Both of whom bring a laid back feel to Daddy’s usual “hypeness”.

Although I must say it is rather interesting if not a bit awkward, to hear Snoop and Paul doing their best to adjust to the flavorful Reggaeton beats. The quality of sound from the live performances is quite amazing (a lot better than some live hip hop albums I’ve heard), as on point as studio recordings. Keeping in mind that Daddy sells out major stadiums and arenas, the energy of the tens of thousands of fans singing along word for word on these live tracks is nothing short of contagious.

The DVD features the usual photo gallery, the “Corazones” video (which is just as gripping as the message in the song), live concert footage, a trailer for his upcoming movie “Talento de Barrio” and some documentary footage. Although the visuals are appealing and definitely give a bigger picture of Daddy Yankee’s popularity, the lack of flow makes it a bit awkward to navigate. I would recommend this as more of a complimentary piece than an introduction to Daddy Yankee (the music anyway).

Although a must have for Daddy fans, for those new to Daddy or Reggaeton you will definitely want to go with (the original) Barrio Fino. I understand the desire to introduce Daddy to the american market better, but this wasn’t the way to do it. Although the DVD was a nice bonus, us already established fans were expecting a little more than just 4 new joints.
