GeoBooks: Birth Of A Nation by Aaron McGruder, Reginald Hudlin, Illustrated by Kyle Baker

Reviewed By Constant

Birth Of A Nation is an intriguing book published by Three River Press about the city of East St. Louis, Illnois, a poverty stricken little brother of the famous Missouri city.

The city gets no love from the government in the state or nationally and fictionally breaks off from the United States after the 2000 presidential election where votes were not voted and people were disenfranchised. The town mayor organizes the leave and people know have to deal with the government as an outsider.

Aaron McGruder (of Boondocks fame) along with Reginald Hudlin (House Party) do the writing with illustrations done by Kyle Baker (Why I Hate Saturn).

You get to see the politics involved with moving from under the US's power and how the US trying to thwart the move. Interestingly enough the town makes arrangements with foreign powers and that causes a big stir in the US causing craziness to occur. While the president isn't named Bush the character in the presidency is very similar as are the surrounding cast.

It's a book that will make you think about the reality Americans are facing right now! Sacrifices have to be made and people get disappointed in the book and their actions and reactions are interesting to say the least!

Would this be possible...read for yourself and make a judgement for yourself. There is sex, money, murder, cover ups and virtually everything we see in real life politics ( thought I was gonna say "in the movies")in this book and the book also gives a look at how the majority African-American people in the city deal with each other and how that is a positive/negative on the situation.

Only 137 pages I was impressed with the book and while very funny the book should be considered more than just fluff! The book has a lot of political commentary throughout and could be used in mature
classrooms everywhere.

I'll give the book 4.5 GeoGlobes.
