GeoBooks: Aaron McGruder, A Right to be Hostile
Reviewed By Clayton Ruley

A Right to be Hostile is a collection of the Boondocks comic strips that has recently been made into the popular and successful Cartoon Network television show. The comic for those who do not know revolves around two young black children: Huey and Riley Freeman and their dealing in the suburbs of Chicago after moving there with there grandfather who is retired.

Based on the life of Aaron McGruder the comics creator,

The Boondocks is a edgy look at life in these boys eyes and how differently they handle it. Huey (named after Huey P. Newton, renoun Black Panther leader) is a young revolutionary while Riley is a wannabe gangster that reminds many of those often going falling victim to the "system" and its traps. Along the way you have other characters like Ceasar, a young kid from Brooklyn, who is Huey's sidekick and friend (although he does bust on his mom a lot!) The DuBois family featuring Thomas, a black lawyer married to a white woman and their offspring Jazmine, a lovable yet naive little girl!

This comic strip is definitely politically and socially charged and brings up subjects and opinions that you hear and don't hear in mainstream media which is very good! Some topics covered in this collection of the comic strip include, President Clinton's impeachment trial, R. Kelly and his alleged urination problems, The 2000 Presidential Election and of course Hip Hop and it's course!

This comic strip doesn't just discuss people in the supposed "right wing" but also African Americans which is healthy, necessary and should not be considered hating! Funny, well drawn and filled with many mental
teasers. The TV show and this book should be watched/read by many! McGruder started the comic at the University of Maryland student newspaper, The
Diamondback in 1997 and now it's in 300 newspapers around the country.

I'll give the book 5 GeoGlobes.
